This was the celebratory scene as the 32 Bus Eireann bus left Castleblayney on time this evening for the first time in its long history.

This is no disrespect to any of the remaining teams, but all things considered, this is Armagh’s title to lose now. They’ve been one of the best teams in the country over the past five years but haven’t even been the best team in Ulster since 2008. It remains wide open of course, but for me Armagh still have the edge.

@movementcoachkm Think it’s a bit rich talking about being reactive and recency bias when 3 hours after full time in the Ulster Final last year you tweeted this. It will go down in history as one of the worst takes of all time. Low hanging fruit having a pop at an analyst fresh on the scene.

GAA commentary and analysis is so reactive and full of recency bias in its outlook. Not to mention the incredible over emphasis on the cult of the manager. Anyone watching football with any bit of an analytical eye could see there are lots of positive things happening in Westmeath football in general. They’ve been well coached with a few years now. Their young players would have got great growth out of D2 near misses last year. Inexperience cost them anywhere from 2 to 6 points in the league. And it probably had to happen that way. That’s football. It’s very steep learning the way we structure competitions. They got another set back a few weeks ago not getting promoted back up with a last minute goal. Had they not had previous experiences like 2024/25 then it’s most likely Meath would have won last week. Bouncing back takes practice too, it’s no different to kicking off your weak side. That’s not to say Mark McHugh isn’t brilliant. He could be a genius, I haven’t a clue. However he didn’t do all this in 2026, he is layering on top of endless other work and undoubtedly individual strength and talent. Westmeath were showing a lot of what came out last weekend with at least 2 seasons, just not consistency within games or game to game. It’s just they have put it together more solidly now. We have to move away from magic wand thinking. Development takes time, it takes set backs and it’s non linear and messy.

Nigel Dunne has been impressed by the belief and energy shown by Westmeath under manager Mark McHugh and feels they can make a big mark this season. #RTEGAA Podcast: youtube.com/watch?v=K4c7t3…
