@Llib7 north Melbourne's street geometry (the awkward join between the Hoddle grid and Melbourne grid) makes intersection closures especially rewarding in terms of new parkland

This was the area I was observing. So there are about 4-5 LTN’s (black circle) and some conversions into 1 way streets, one way street conversions also free up road space and don’t really prevent access which should help with the politics of implementation in #melbourne

POV, walking through here (north #melbourne) in morning & realised we can totally reduce car dependence for school runs & other trips through greening redundant road space and LTN’s. Saw very few cars & my guess is walking cycling & SCOOTERING/PMD’S had at least 80% mode share

How many Melburnians live within walking distance of our railway stations - I crunched the numbers, and unfortunately, it's less than half, but it differs greatly across council areas.

@tayser82 7 years car free* here. Even with a kid, we haven't really needed a car. we'll see what happens when #2 comes along. If I do need one, cheap 2nd hand EV will be the go. *very lite

@PierreVairo Having not been dependent on a car for 15 years and only now just getting to the point where I can afford/justify the convenience of a car, the limited use cases I’ll have for a car will be 100% no problem on electric.

Fark knows why people buy hybrids - it's the worst of both worlds. Small electric-only battery/range, a small engine and all the ICE fuel/service costs. 🤯 Anyhow PHEVs for April: 9,628 BEVs for April: 15,459. Top 3: BYD, Geely and Zeekr (Geely group). thedriven.io/2026/05/05/aus…

@PierreVairo I used AI to disguise them as parking spots so the council wouldn’t dare touch them.

Having a look at these trees for the final time before the council rips them up tomorrow for a tennis court. I’m the most non-NIMBY person in this neighbourhood but this is a terrible decision. ☹️

@roodave something like an EMU with onboard battery for extra *umph* up the hills? or is it the motors that is the bottleneck for grades?

Like instead of fucking about with the “boring company” or whatever why can’t some more engineering heft be put behind developing an HSR EMU that can develop enough power at 250km/hr to handle a 5% grade? Would be a game changer for capital (alignment, formation) costs

Slightly disappointed to learn that Brightline West has stepped back from originally planned 5% max grades to a more conventional 3.5%. I thought they’d tapped into a real technological advancement there (with big alignment cost savings)

@tayser82 Energy Connect (SA-NSW) has just finished construction too. first juice to flow in June-July iirc. Should send SA's renewables share even higher than its current 75%

Marinus Link has Federal Government approval. (This will boost VIC<->TAS interconnect from 500MW [existing Basslink capacity] to 2GW after the build (Marius is 2 x 750MW cables)). miragenews.com/tasmania-gains…

Much has been written in the media about the booing at the welcome to country at the dawn service these past few years, but I haven't seen anything about the applause and cheers Uncle Colin gets at the 'G
