@culturaltutor @JeremyFarrar Oranges arrived in Europe c.10th century, but the ancient Romans had carrots, so why is the colour not called carrot? Turns out that ancient carrots were white and orange ones only arrived after the orange c.15th century.

@bswud It is very rare, but is also very rare for the planning system to allow significantly greater density, which may explain the rarity. One area where planners are now allowing greater density is Docklands but most resi leases are nowhere near the term date.

@bswud That's not right. Both the 1967 Act (houses) and the 1993 Act (flats) give the landlord redevelopment rights at the original term date when the lease has been extended. The landlord can make an application for possession on redevelopment grounds.

The old system of leasehold (before enfranchisement in 1967 and 1993) allowed you to buy or sell the right to live somewhere, not subject to rent changes, for a specific period of time. This has a number of virtues. 🧵
