@ricardusfirst Wait whaaat?? Fact no. 4 is so crazy to me, why did he suddenly jump into the sea like he wanted to commit suicide??😭 It's not because he's getting married soon, right? (I've heard he always tries to avoid marriage for various reasons)

Wackiest facts about Richard 🤔 1. By the time Richard was captured he was only accompanied by his loyal William de l'Etang. I still think it was insane of him to attempt to cross Germany with one knight. 2. Luckily for us, his beautiful hair grew after his bout with Arnaldia (which took hair and nails of the ailing). By the time he was fighting in Jaffa a year later, Baha al din describes his shiny copper hair as bright as his banner. But Philippe’s hair did not grow back. He remained bald as an egg and no doubt blamed Richard for that too. 3. He loved practical jokes and always spoke half in truth half in jest to the confusion of saphadyn who never knew his true meaning. 4. During the landing in Cyprus he leapt into the sea with full armor because suicidal I guess. 5. His horse is one of the few medieval horses that are actually famous - perhaps the only one from the 12th century that we know its name and that contemporaries speak of properly. He bedazzled all who saw it and his king rider and was on the run for the fastest horse of their time. But I’ll talk about him in a post later.

@ricardusfirst When we decide to love someone, we don't just see and love the good parts about them, but we also accept the fact that there are bad sides to them. I've been following you for the past few weeks but I've already asked a lot of questions, I'm sorry if any of my questions upsed you

@ricardusfirst Loving someone feels so good, even though sometimes things can feel heavy. I once hesitated to read to the end of a historical figure I liked because I knew there would be many negative things about him. But, that's how love works and I slowly learned to accept him for who he is.

Yesterday I had one of those crisis in which I couldn’t deal with anything remotely negative about Ric so how can I even read a book when I know there’s gonna be something remotely controversial (and I’ve been getting difficult comments that overwhelm me). Today I’m in a “I cannot contain my love for dead man I need to read all the things about him. Tomorrow we’ll see.

@ricardusfirst Their relationship must be very good, to the point that Richard calls Saphadin brother. Speaking of brothers, does brother Richard (John) also have connections with Arabs?

The whole complot by the German and French to imprison Richard was based on his apparent friendship with Saladin’s brother, Saphadin - they accused him of colluding with the Saracen by virtue of his cordial relationship with him and others in that circle including Saladin. And indeed, Richard and Saphadin seem to have developed something remarkably close to friendship. Richard called him “my brother” and even proposed, at least partly in earnest, a marriage between Saphadin and his sister Joan as part of a peace settlement. Saphadin sent him Arabian horses as gifts, inquired after his health when he was ill, and treated him with a degree of personal warmth that went beyond diplomacy. Richard didn’t care that they were Saracen, Arabs or “infidels”, he admired courage wherever he found it. The same quality that made him respect Saladin also made him respect Saphadin. They were enemies, certainly, but they were enemies who recognized something of themselves in one another. What I mean is, Richard could be many things by modern standards. Impulsive. Violent. Ambitious to a fault. But a man incapable of respecting those outside his own faith? The evidence suggests otherwise and those that today align with extreme right views using him as standard are barking at the wrong tree.

@ricardusfirst fell seriously ill seven times during the third crusade!? I had read briefly that he fell ill several times in his life, I didn't expect him to fall ill seven times during the war. Was Richard's frequent illnesses due to internal factors/external factors such as poor treatment?

Fun fact!! eyeglasses didn’t exist by the time Richard was alive, in fact it would take another 200 years for they to be invented by the Italians. In the 12th century people would use magnifying glasses but there were no such thing as wearable glasses. Fortunately for Richard, there is no indication that he struggled with his vision. His real problem was his spectacularly unreliable immune system. During the Third Crusade alone, he was seriously ill at least seven recorded times, twice to the point that people feared he might die. Then, on the journey home, he got sick again, which helped set the stage for the series of events that led to his capture. So no, Richard didn’t need glasses. He just needed his body to stop trying to kill him every few months.

@ricardusfirst I see, so at that time even in England itself English only used by the public? It feels very contrasting considering that in the last few centuries English has become an international language. This is new information for me, thank you! translators at that time were so important.

Saladin couldn’t speak English either. English was also incredibly useless 😅 it didn’t matter outside of England (and even in England, royalty and high nobility spoke French). The right question would be “if Richard couldn’t speak Arabic or Kurdish and Saladin couldn’t speak French or Latin how did they communicate?” And translators of course! For Richard that was usually Humphrey de Toron! Humphrey de Toron was Isabella’s real husband until he was bullied to divorce her so Conrad could marry her (but that’s beside the point). He was a poulain lord (those born in outremer) and fluent in Arabic.

@ricardusfirst I'm curious, if Richard can't speak English then what language did he use to communicate with Saladin?

This isn’t very ✨✨✨historically accurate✨✨✨✨ I don’t think Saladin would be intimidated like this. Maybe scared to be taught a science lesson in the middle of the desert.
