Professor Pingosaurus

@Pingosaurus

A dinosaur who masquerades as a Professor of Physics. Sings a bit. Open the door, get on the floor, everyone follow the PINGOSAUR. (she / her)

After nearly 5 months, 14 balls of wool, and quite a lot of swearing, I am delighted to say that my Persian Tiles - Eastern Jewels blanket is complete! #crochet 💕

I was reading George Orwell and Joseph Heller aged 10. Obviously I had a lot of questions. 🤣

I grew up in the 70s. Both my parents worked - they had to, we had fuck all money. My mum went back to teaching six weeks after I was born. The one thing they were pathological about was reading to me. No matter how tired they were they read to me. It’s how you build readers.

I just read books as a child, I didn’t measure them by page count. No one told me I shouldn’t, no one said it was too hard. When I met words or concepts I didn’t understand I asked the adults in my life and they explained them. I’m sorry no one cared enough to give you that gift.

No one is suggesting we give the Silmarrilion to 12 year olds (though I wouldn’t rule it out), but fucks sake, the Hobbit is entry level fantasy for any child who loves reading.

The Hobbit was described by its own author as a children’s book. It was written specifically for this purpose to lighten his heavier prose of his more serious works. If Tolkien himself is saying it’s written for kids, I’m not arguing with that.

@Pingosaurus I'm a sucker for "big emotions", all that soaring music and build-up. But can get why it rankles. Will now have to listen to Italy anthem properly.

Apart from Italy, which is a certified banger, all other National Anthems really are absolute dog shit.

@amerjitbasi You’re right, though I will disagree on the US anthem which I think is cringeworthy. Most of my ill informed opinion is based on F1 where I look forward to Ferrari being on the podium as at least it’s a good tune.

@Pingosaurus Surely La Marseillaise is up there as a great anthem, & I think the American anthem is also fantastic, though all lies. Hearing the South African anthem also made me remember how familiar it is due to the fight against apartheid. Ours is truly dreadful, a dirge and awful words.

@Otacon @fightvemodalen Okay I’m now totally sold. It has everything I love in a national anthem. Jaunty, fun, serious section in the middle which sounds a bit Les Mis. 10/10, mo notes. And what a crowd!

@fightvemodalen @Pingosaurus Sorry to intrude. If your planning to hear the Chilean Anthem, might I suggest this particular interpretation? Dates from 1990, at an event at Estadio Nacional. This is one of the few recordings that has the original pitch as written on the notation youtu.be/qMpFYseNd4g

On the subject of children reading complex books. I was 11 when I read The Hobbit. We read it OUT LOUD as part of our English class. It ruined Tolkien for me for life as I wasn’t allowed to enjoy it at my own pace. I got told off for reading ahead and I never read Tolkien again.

This has genuinely got me bothered. Pre social media, books were our friends - especially if you were a nerdy, awkward kid. Stories expanded the limits of our imagination, gave us hope, made us feel that someone understood us. Reading was life saving. It still is.

@evilokapi I do love the current “god save the quing” we get as collectively we’ve still not accepted old sausage fingers as our ruler.

Obviously I would never resort to physical violence but if he were to regularly step on Lego I wouldn’t be devastated.

I once had a male PhD student in a totally unrelated field explain to me why my recently published Nature Materials paper was wrong and a colleague physically put themselves between us as he was concerned I might lamp him.
