Mocha made it through the surgery and is home and recovering. We learned a ton from the exploration and things are fragile but positive. Turns out he did not have a mass on his Spleen. It was actually an extremely enraged mesenteric lymph node and not the Spleen. The Spleen itself had a little discoloration but is fine otherwise. This is overall great news as a splenectomy is a really big deal. The two other lymph nodes are the gastric nodes. These were also both enraged. One of them was removed for analysis and sent off to the lab. His gallbladder is thickened but has no stones or other blockage. We had been giving him medication to help clear any potential blockage so there is a chance that a blockage was the root cause and it's cleared now. He has been passing bile due to this which is a good sign. Overall it looks like his gallbladder became blocked which caused infection. This had a downstream effect of damaging the liver and pancreas as well as setting off all of the lymph nodes described here. With him home and getting a heavy dose of antibiotics things are looking positive. Neither Frog nor Toad needed to be used for a blood transfusion thankfully. They just got to hang out in the hospital and be grumpy boys. If things change they will be called on again. We've sent out tissue samples for basically everything described here to culture any infection and check to make sure no cancer is involved.

Mocha is going in for exploratory surgery today. It's a hail mary attempt to save his life. He's got reduced Liver and Gallbladder functionality, a large mass on his Spleen, and two angry Lymph Nodes that we're hoping aren't also cancer. He's only three and previously survived Disseminated Ideopathic Myofascitis due to Chemo and a LOT of care. Put simply he's had it rough and the odds are against him here. During the surgery we're bringing in both Frog and Toad two of our largest ferrets as transfusion donors. Ferrets don't have blood types which makes this considerably less complicated but still difficult. This makes sure there is a ready fresh blood supply should it be needed. Rescue is hard as hell sometimes and nature doesn't care what is or isn't fair. We're going to do our best for him here and hope everything goes well.
