I genuinely want these films to succeed. A lot of talented artists put real work into them, as do many execs behind them. No one goes to work to fail. That said, the early audience signals are concerning on #Supergirl. Her trailer pulled ~9.5M views with nearly 30k dislikes in its first day, while Superman hit ~36M views in 24 hours and has around 21k dislikes spread over six months. That disparity isn’t noise — it’s a signal. And before the either side tries to make it about wokeness, when you layer this on top of the broader slate performance we’ve already seen across all studios when it comes to superheroes, it suggest these projects as a genre itself may be facing headwinds that deserve attention sooner rather than later — and they have nothing to do with the color or genitalia of their leads. Fundamentally, the emotional connection audiences had to superheroes has slowly evaporated. Comics were born out of strong artists taking bold swings on great story. Every time publishing dip, new bold voices came in with big swings that resurrected comics instead of trying to rearrange the messy deck chairs of what came before as the boat sinks. Not attacking. Just saying, especially for the creatives on these projects, these numbers aren’t a referendum on the them but on the business model that forgets to nail one clear question with these projects: Where is the emotional connection? Still rooting for these projects, but more and more I feel like the guy fell in love with the first wave of Westerns only to watch the market cycle to a new genre in the 70s, which I think could be today’s anime.

The trailer did not draw me in. A complete shift in tone from Superman. Probably not the best to start your DCU with getting fans excited about the positive David playing positive Superman and then making Supergirl the complete opposite and starting the trailer with Krypto peeing in an image of him. Honestly, if they were gonna go for a joke about the dog peeing, why not a picture of Lex?

is it really a bad thing for someone like QT to give people a chance to learn and improve? she actively condemns things people say even when it’s a joke made in bad taste, and from an outsider pov, it’s evident she’s taught people a lot about how their words hold weight and can be much more negatively perceived than they’d realized. there’s so much more to her intentions than the phrase “you are not who you associate with” implies, and imo criticizing her for this heavily nuanced sentiment that was just boiled down to one simple sentence discounts everything she’s been working for (which has no doubt always been inclusivity and cohabitation).
