Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house not a creature was stirring, except for me moving invisibly amid the decorations with plenty of festive Essential Classics @BBCRadio3. Our man at the scene makes his Christmas address to the EC Collective.

@findmypast @DavidOlusoga Smelling it when out and about. Quite scary of course, but I was only a young child so in some ways it was also quite exciting.

"It makes you re-question everything you know," says @maitlis. Prince Andrew promised Jeffrey Epstein the pair would "play some more soon" in an email sent a year after he claimed to have cut all contact with the convicted sex trafficker thenewsagents.co.uk/article/prince…

I've always loved paintings and have known some remarkable artists, so to spend time here, on my own, in Buckingham Palace and other such private spaces has been a big thrill. There WAS a dress code! Why not join me as I explore 400 years @RCT @BBCRadio3, starting this Saturday.

@PetrocTrelawny really enjoying today’s journey as it so reminds me of teenage summer holidays going up to Edinburgh to stay with my godmother, a dance teacher. Early days of the Festival.

@DanWuori I wish I had gotten that kind of time with my C-section babies! I got to see them, maybe give them a quick kiss and they were whisked off

How do you plan to greet your newborn in his or her first minutes? This alert little one is enjoying the benefits of at least two special gifts as they enter the world. The first is direct skin to skin contact - which helps to calm newborns and assists in the regulation of their body temperature. Importantly, this early physical contact also promotes the release of oxytocin (also known as “the love hormone”) in the brain, which not only promotes bonding, but hastens the letdown of milk for feeding. (This is typically done chest to chest. This baby’s placement around mom’s face is likely due to birth by c-section, which is likely being tended to as this video is shot.) The other thing is that baby is immediately surrounded by the loving voices of their parents, both of which they’ve been learning with interest over the course of the third trimester. Different birthing facilities follow different approaches to early bathing, for example (this little one has clearly been cleaned up, at least a little) etc. So it’s worth having a conversation in advance with the medical team about your priorities for the first minutes and hours, emphasizing your desire for skin to skin contact as soon as feasible, for example. A bath can - and generally should - wait. There are no guarantees, of course, that your little one will be as calm and alert as this little one in their earliest minutes… but skin to skin and surrounded by familiar loving voices is a great way to start.
