These might be some of the cutest cards you’ve likely never seen ☺️ These cards and their unique illustrations all come from the Intro Pack Neo half decks that were produced only in Japan (Picture 2). The Intro Pack Neo was released on April 6th, 2001. There were two main half decks: Chikorita and Totodile. Each half deck also came with a side deck. The decks were developed as a way of introducing more players to the TCG. The rule set was simplified in ways, in an attempt to make the game more accessible. This worked well in Japan. Each half deck included 30 cards, numbered 1-30 (seen in the bottom right of the card). The side decks consisted of 10 cards meant to help supplement the half deck for some level of variability. In these decks, there are 18 unique illustrations, never seen in any other format or set. These were all illustrated by either Kagemaru Himeno, Atsuko Nishida, or Ken Sugimori. The sets also came with three holos: Metal Energy, Meganium, and Feraligatr. These illustrations are all reused from the Neo Genesis set of cards.

With the release of this movie, there was also the release of the Theatre VS Limited Pack of Pokémon cards. (Picture 1) This half-deck was a Japanese exclusive product that was released on July 13, 2002 (the same day as the movie). The half deck consisted of 18 cards, two of which were holographic: Latios and Latias. The cards reference the town of Alto Mare, the town setting for the movie. The set also features of number of specific locations and trainers from the movie with specific trainer cards, like Annie’s Espeon.

After being back in this space for the last 6 years, I’ve now gone through two big celebration sets with the 25th and 30th anniversaries of Pokémon I can confidently say this 30th anniversary celebration has been much more exciting ✨
