📖🇵🇱🇭🇺🇹🇷🇫🇷 On this day, March 14, Józef Bem (known in Turkish as Murad Pasza / Murat Paşa) was born. He is a hero to three nations: Poles, Hungarians, and Turks. Józef Bem was a Pole/Catholic who was born in Tarnów. ---------- Józef Bem took part in the Napoleonic Wars on Napoleon's side, then in the November Uprising, the Hungarian Uprising, ending with joining the Turkish Army. He was awarded orders: 🇫🇷 Légion d’honneur. 🇵🇱 Virtuti Militari. 🇭🇺 Magyar Katonai Érdemrend. ---------- Controversies, although very small, do exist. The controversy is based mainly on historical trauma and the strong emotions associated with it. Józef Bem's joining the Turkish army was tantamount to accepting Islam, which may (but does not have to) currently cause animosity towards Turkey among some Poles (mainly a small but vocal group). This stems from the fact that Poles, i.e., Catholics, were persecuted in the Prussian partition, and the Catholic Church itself was deemed by the Prussian authorities to be an enemy defending Polish national identity through Catholicism. In the Russian partition, Poles were forced to convert to Orthodoxy, and Catholic churches were converted into Orthodox churches. These events were a process of Germanization and Russification. Therefore, Józef Bem's conversion to Islam, which was solely a political act aimed at joining the Turkish Army, is perceived by some Poles as an attack on Polish national identity, because Catholicism is not a addition to being Pole but one of the foundations of being Pole.

Mileikowsky was (according to Wikipedia) a Russian-born Zionist. The correct spelling is Милейковский, as translating this surname from Cyrillic can result in many variants of the same surname, spelled differently.
