A total of 30 police officers have today successfully completed a five-month Basic Canine Handling and Dog Care Course at the Nsambya Barracks Canine Headquarters. The ceremony was presided over by AIGP @bamunoba24, Chief Political Commissar, who represented the Inspector General of Police as the chief guest. Addressing the graduates, AIGP @bamunoba24 emphasized that K9 is a critical force multiplier, noting that the Police has solved numerous crimes with the support of sniffer dogs. “These dogs are doing a great job,” he remarked. He further highlighted the importance of continuous training and skills development, urging the officers to apply the knowledge acquired to enhance service delivery and strengthen the fight against crime within communities. Bamunoba also encouraged the officers to build their K9 expertise as a professional career path that can propel them to higher levels. He stressed the need for discipline, respect for institutional systems, patriotism, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, warning against alcoholism, drug abuse, and irresponsible conduct. Meanwhile, CP Dr. Mugume Martin, Commandant of the K9 Unit, noted that during the intensive five-month training, participants were equipped with a wide range of skills. These included explosive detection, basic veterinary science, human trailing and tracking, obstacle and agility training, canine scent discrimination and suspect identification, as well as crime scene examination and the integration of canines into investigations.
