@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg We can still do as we wish, and the EU can do as it wishes. It's how trade usually works between sovereign nations. Decisions have consequences....but we're free to make them.

@Politax3 @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg We cannot do as we wish in all cases because the EU is our major trading partner, and if we swan off on a tuppeny thing, we’ll lose even more trade, but hey, you economic Pygmy’s are good at burning the house down?

@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg We can do as we wish. This a clear example of vice versa. Clearly we're not going to immediately implement a brand new set of different regulations but over time we'll diverge. Already there are additives that the EU doesn't require to have allergens labeled but the UK does etc.

@Politax3 @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg UK cosmetic regulations are closely aligned with EU, they operate independently post-Brexit, but we have a mirror regulation, resulting in UK admin of a system we mimic, and we’re not going to diverge from because our biggest cosmetic trade partner is the EU, 22 miles away. Next?

@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg No, you must comply with UK law. If, for example, you want to import cosmetics into the UK they must be registered with a UK body and have a UK based responsible person to ensure compliance. This isn't the EU deeming anything.

@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg Of course there is vice versa? EU can't export goods into the UK which don't adhere to UK standards. Most do, in both directions. Same as anywhere else. Plus, alignment when we don't export is unnecessary, but still expensive.

@Politax3 @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg There’s no vice versa, closer alignment reduces trade frictions, making it easier and cheaper to export to the EU. We don’t have to, but then we lose out. We take, they give!

@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg Where we want to be and where we should be is agreeing to their standards on products we export to the EU, and vice versa. If an ISA, for example, doesn't meet some future EU regulation we shouldn't need to care.

@Politax3 @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg “The EU is increasingly becoming the "regulatory lodestar" for the UK, with the government introducing laws allowing ministers to mirror new EU product safety standards to avoid friction.” And we’re not in the club? Sounds like we’re a taker? Seems you like that, being a taker?

@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg Again, MIFID was already implemented. What makes you think we need to outsource our regulations to people outside the UK? And if you like the principle that the EU passes better laws, then it doesn't stop there, does it? Either way, I don't want to be a part of it.

@Politax3 @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg Post brexit the UK introduced its own MIFID, aligned to the EU. Was there something wrong in MIFID wanting to ensure that products are appropriate for clients and act in their best interest? Or were you hoping post Brexit to fleece the punters, line pockets and grift?

@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg This is literally what you said. Complaining about the post-Brexit regulation regime whilst citing an EU-era catastrophe. Maybe, just maybe, we can create better regulations ourselves?

@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg But we were in the EU? Our regulations had to comply with EU law. MIFID was enacted in 2004. The major financial catastrophe of post war-UK happened whilst we were in the EU, with the regulations flowing from the EU....just how you like it.

@Politax3 @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg ‘In 2008, UK banking regulation was handled by a "tripartite" system consisting of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) as the primary regulator, the Bank of England, and HM Treasury. The FSA, was directly responsible for supervising individual firms.’ BOE website; oops.

@olafado @dsmyleq @OgbeniDemola Am I freer than I would have been 300 years ago? Of course I am! 300 years ago you were born into status and stayed there. We are educated, we can vote, we can protest. You really need to learn about medieval Europe. It wasn't the Disneyland you think it was.

@Politax3 @dsmyleq @OgbeniDemola At what expense. Almost like you think basic and don’t look into things. Like are you freer or can you do less. Are you more controlled, are you living more or building blocks for others to live etc. educated fools are in abundance, thinkers are lacking today.

@Politax3 @dsmyleq @OgbeniDemola It’s crazy because the point I’m making we see right now live. Reality happening and the version they write in history like the wars Covid etc. we see what happens and we see what is documented are far from each other. Some people are just too ignorant to catch the pattern.

@olafado @dsmyleq @OgbeniDemola Yes, the progress has just been made up. Those diseases were made up. People lived happy healthy lives in meritocracies until they died peacefully in their sleep. This was well known to be the typical human condition for the previous 10 millenia. Crackpot.

@thatsmabhoy @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg Certain people in every industry prefer less regulation. I would remind you in 2008 the EU was in charge of our financial regulation. How did that turn out? More isn't always better.

@Politax3 @RosemaryStewar1 @Jacob_Rees_Mogg Isn’t it odd that you can’t see why certain investment banks would prefer less regulation. The "regulatory web" is seen by some as essential for investor protection and financial stability, balancing profits with public good. Remember 2008, when RBS ran out of capital? Not spivs?
