As someone living in Asia, I feel profound disappointment regarding this discriminatory gesture issue. Gestures exaggerating Asian physical features have long been a “symbol of discrimination” excluded in Western societies. They are a common tactic in bullying forced upon children in schools and have repeatedly been subject to disciplinary action in the sports world. That a public figure would reenact this gesture, either without understanding its historical context or while understanding it yet dismissing its significance, cannot be dismissed as a mere blunder. Even more serious is the reality that many Finnish citizens are reacting with statements like, “Don't make such a fuss over something this trivial!” or “Don't you have a sense of humor?” The argument that “it's not discrimination if there's no intent” no longer holds up under international human rights standards. Moreover, ‘insults’ directed at other ethnic groups cannot be dismissed as jokes. Regarding this incident, not only Chinese people but many Asians have openly expressed their displeasure. Of course, to my knowledge, Finland has many kind and sincere citizens. Precisely because of this, allowing the “cultural landscape where discrimination is mistaken for mere humor” to persist unchecked is an act that damages Finland's reputation and directly impacts the safety of its Asian residents. We urge all relevant parties to recognize that this issue is not merely a “reaction from a specific country,” but an international challenge concerning the dignity of all Asia. We expect your country to take actions consistent with the human rights principles it champions within the international community. @alexstubb @FinGovernment @PehrmanKatja
