@ooomuller I rarely hear that word in the US these days. More common are euphemistic terms like "meat packing plant". However we do still use the term "manslaughter", which is a legal term that means something like "unintentionally killing someone due to recklessness, etc."

"Discussion" to me implies focusing on a topic with some goal in mind, aiming at some resolution. "Conversation" means people are talking with one another. Am I from another planet on this one?

It's interesting to me that the word "conversation" has taken over a lot of contexts where "discussion" used to appear. "Discussion" doesn't mean "have an argument" like some Romance cognates may imply, at least in the US. Is the verb "discuss" a scary monster to some?

La 2.0 de NTE si o si será en china y no es solo porque si. >Los juegos gachas siempre al tener una versión en china son financiados por el gobierno chino. >Sucedio en todos los juegos de hoyoverse y ahora en wuling en arknights endfield >Honestamente mientras no lo hagan tan aburrido como en zzz para mí esta bien >Ojalá sea una China futurista y cyberpunk al estilo de NTE, y no se vayan a lo tradicional lento de cultura antigua. #Nevernesstoeverness #NTE #Ntecreator

Another = an + other. "A whole other" is correct. However, in the US you will still sometimes hear "a whole nother", since some still want that "n" to be there. Do you hear this in the UK and other places as well?

@PolyglotZone @John_Barach We are kindred linguistic spirits, Polyglot! I also hate the weird newer use of “casted.” I was a pro theater actress and we were never “casted” in a part. We were cast. It was a direct thing. Somebody chose to hire us. We were CAST. End rant!

In American English, the phrase is "different from"; in British English, it is often "different to" -- but what sense does that make? Even in British English, you don't say "X differs to Y"; you say "X differs from Y."

@LipstickMystic2 @John_Barach I am on the same page with this one as well. Here is another one: when people want to express agreement by saying "agree" as opposed to "agreed". "Agree" sounds like the command "Agree!", as in "Agree with me!" How hard is it for people to type an extra letter?

@LipstickMystic2 @John_Barach I am from the US and I hate it too. This is the result of people reading less books, in my view. The only way this would be correct: If I were officiating a graduation ceremony, and my school walked up to the podium and I handed it a diploma. Then I could say I graduated it.

@John_Barach Pet peeve; in the US people randomly started “graduating high school or college” when in my day, you would graduate FROM things. Just wanna scream at these “graduates” and say, “Go back to class until you learn to speak properly!”

@p_ribon_p When I was a kid in the US, the X word would have been Xylophone. I think it's a mistake to have kids memorize proper nouns like this when they are starting with English, but that's just my opinion.

@tuuu28283 I am learning Japanese right now. I know there are many layers of formality, and that I don't understand them well yet. For that reason I am only going to use only the polite forms of Japanese until I reach at least B1 level. Why? Because I don't know the culture well enough yet

@tuuu28283 You would be safest to just use "yes". The variations that you noted take a long time and personal experience in many contexts to get right. I would consider this a C2 question, or something critical for those living and/or working in a native English environment.

@tuuu28283 Never underestimate how irritating it is for native speakers when slang, non-standard or colloquial terms are misused. The goal is to sound fluent but it has the opposite impact. I am accepting of all these mistakes because I make them in all my target lang. Just be aware.
