Arsonists reportedly used stray cats to ignite wildfires that have ravaged Southern Italy, investigators have said. Authorities examining the causes of fires in Calabria claim they have discovered evidence that felines were used as living fire-starters. It's been reported that arsonists put rags soaked in flammable liquid on the cats before setting them alight. The felines are then released in dry vegetation, spreading the fire in their panic. Candles and homemade delayed ignition devices were also reportedly found close to burnt-out areas, adding to suspicions that fires were deliberately started. The suspected tactic was revealed as firefighters battled infernos that have torn through the Pollino National Park, one of Italy's largest protected areas, where around 1,000 hectares of vegetation has already been destroyed. “These animals were released into the fields, running around and spreading the fire,” Domenico Costarella, head of Calabria's Civil Protection agency has been quoted as saying. Mr Costarella said more than 160 fires had been recorded across Calabria in recent days, blaming many of them on what he called “malicious individuals”. Italy's Association for the Defence of Animals and the Environment has announced a £870 reward for information leading to those responsible being identified and convicted, while campaigners have also lodged criminal complaints with prosecutors. Investigators have said this is not the first time animals have allegedly been used to spread fires. Similar methods were employed by crime groups in Sicily in 2016 and near Mount Vesuvius the following year.
