“You’re more of a son to me. I should have said that before.” Paul flew across the country. Had a five-minute conversation. Set up a breakfast date Jimmy didn’t ask for. And said the three words this show has been building toward for three seasons. It’s the finale of Shrinking S3, “And That’s Our Time.” Alice leaves. Gabby proposes. And Jimmy finally chooses the scars. What a season. What a show. What a ride. 🎧 episode out now — link in bio/comments #Shrinking #ShrinkingS3 #AndThatsOurTime #ShrinkingFinale #AppleTVPlus #ShrinkingPodcast #PopCulturePastor

New episode. Labyrinth turns 40 and we have thoughts. Jim Henson directs. George Lucas produces. Terry Jones writes the script. David Bowie shows up in pants that traumatized an entire generation of children. And a 14-year-old Jennifer Connelly holds it all together. It bombed. Made $12 million on a $25 million budget. Henson never directed another film. And then something happened: the cult found it on VHS and never let go. We break down what holds up, what doesn’t, the Satan archetype hiding in plain sight, and why “you have no power over me” might be the most spiritually honest line in any 80s movie. Also: who is Taylor Frankie Paul and why does Dave keep seeing her name everywhere? Listen wherever you get your podcasts. #Labyrinth #DavidBowie #JimHenson #CultClassic #80sMovies

Today feels like a good day to revisit a true relic of the past. 😄 If you’ve got any love for the Nitro era, go dust off Episode 31: The Glory Days of WCW and take a trip back to when wrestling was loud, ridiculous, and somehow glorious. One of the underrated things about Camp Candy is that even in cartoon form, John Candy still felt like… John Candy. Warm. Patient. A little chaotic. But deeply kind. The camp would always be on the verge of falling apart. The kids wouldn’t be getting along. Problems kept showing up. And yet Candy kept leading with humor and heart. These days, that feels absolutely foreign. The best teachers are the ones who teach, not through their big speeches or ability to control, but through the kind of spirit they bring into the room. We’ve lost that. #JohnCandy had that kind of presence. By all accounts, a stand-up guy… and every Saturday his cartoon was giving us that same wisdom: keep showing up, help people get along, and don’t underestimate the power of kindness. I miss John.

Our guest bailed. So we opened The Lobby and let the listeners run the show. This one got spicy. We’re talking books that never should’ve been movies, sequels that made the original worse (looking at you, Gladiator 2), whether Taylor Swift is overrated, and why there’s an Indiana Jones-sized hole in pop culture nobody can fill. Cody says Harrison Ford’s been phoning it in since ‘97. He also says he doesn’t care about Iron Man. I say I’m never watching Invincible. We both agree Dumbledore is shady. Honestly this might be more fun than whatever we had planned. 🔥 New episode out now — link in bio/comments #PopCultureDebate #HotTakes #NerdCulture #StarWarsDebate #HarrisonFord

We’re doing a full Hot Takes episode…and we need YOUR questions, opinions, and arguments. Think stuff like: → “What’s the most overrated movie of all time?” → “Is [beloved character] actually a terrible person?” Pop culture, faith, fandoms, food takes, whatever. If it’s spicy, we want it. Drop your hot takes and questions in the comments or DM us.👇🔥 #HotTakes #AskUsAnything #NerdCulture

I still remember shadow boxing in the lobby of the movie theater after seeing Rocky IV as an 8 year old. If a story inspires you to call somebody, create something, or do a little shadow boxing afterward… that’s probably a good story.

Some stories find us when we need them most. They put words to something we were feeling. They remind us we’re not the only one carrying it. And somehow, for a little while, they make the world feel less lonely. What story helped you feel less alone? 💛

Saturday Morning Cartoons 🐉 One of the coolest tidbits in the Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoons was that the kids never really knew what they were doing. They got dropped in a strange world. They were always behind the curve on knowledge. They got things wrong. A lot. And yet… they kept going. Courageous and brave. That’s part of what the show taught us: You don’t have to feel ready to move forward to advance with confidence…especially when you have a guide/mentor. In today’s age, we have conflated assuredness to mean strength. But sometimes taking the next step when the map still doesn’t make sense is the strongest thing you can do.

The stories that stay with us usually aren’t just the “best” ones. They’re the ones that found us at the right time. That’s why taste is so personal. I loved The Goonies growing up. It was fun movie for kids to be sure…but because I was an only child of a single parent that had a hard time making friends, that movie felt like a dream to me: adventure, belonging, and a crew that already knew you? Bliss. The Goonies were my “friends” when I badly needed them. (Side note: if Sean Astin were to see this, our podcast has a booth at Planet Comicon next weekend. I need to get that photo op. 😆) That’s why I think it’s okay when someone else doesn’t love the story you love. They didn’t live your life. They didn’t need from that story what you needed. Stories are subjective because people are. What a story means to you matters way more than whether it’s universally praised. #goonies #thegoonies #lonelykids

New episode. The Martian turns 10 and we have thoughts. Matt Damon delivers arguably his best performance. Ridley Scott shoots on a $108 million budget and grosses $630 million. Fox calls it a comedy to game the Golden Globes. And the whole thing exists because a software engineer posted free chapters on his blog for a handful of space nerds. We break down what holds up, what doesn’t, the wild Andy Weir origin story, and why Mars put up a historically bad showing trying to kill one botanist over 561 days. Also: did Timothée Chalamet talk himself out of an Oscar? And we play the Movie Game. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. 🎙️ Pop Culture Pastor Podcast | Be Kind Rewind 🎬 The Martian (2015) #TheMartian #BeKindRewind #MattDamon #RidleyScott #MoviePodcast #PopCulturePastor #AndyWeir #MovieReview #FilmPodcast #SpaceMovies #ProjectHailMary
