@BacktwoBackfour @mathsjem I just have so many questions on this. Engineers, lawyers, doctors… but only teachers feel the need to have other teachers ‘prove’ they can teach. And does a ‘show lesson’ prove it..? And are there really that many awful teachers around. I don’t see that in my day to day.

@mathsjem @Popcorn3878 Love this thread. Teacher recruiting is so brutal and we ‘give’ so much of ourselves. Do nurses have to demonstrate their skills when interviewed? Or bus drivers? We do need to ‘see’ the wares, but so brutal still…

@mathsjem Recruitment anywhere can be onerous without being effective. Putting a teacher in a room in an unknown school, unknown kids, unfamiliar routines and tech will surely yield unreliable and unpredictable results. This really isn’t a higher standard of recruitment.

@Popcorn3878 I’ve seen some shockingly bad interview lessons. Qualifications tell you nothing - anyone can pass teacher training. I worked in banking previously - recruitment processes took days - aptitude tests, presentations, panels etc. Teaching shouldn’t have low recruitment standards.

@mathsjem I’ve recruited project managers without seeing them manage a project. You have to trust their qualifications, experience, and references. Teaching is better than most as they’re usually degree educated, and have been through a long training program and probation.

@mathsjem Interesting post. I previously had a career outside of teaching and I always find myself shaking my head at the ‘show lesson’ aspect of teacher recruitment. Such an inefficient and ineffective thing to do in a profession already struggling with workload issues.

A lively discussion in PPP with @JohnWinter2 about inclusion and the pros and cons of mixed ability sets. Safe to say, I would like to see more mixed ability teaching in action before I can decide my opinion #StrathPGDE
