Project Hail Mary is another strong data point in favor of the idea that audiences want original concepts and we should absolutely celebrate its success alongside these smaller films. It's just not a small indie made for less than $10m so the perspective shifts

@PopcornNMovie Everyone showed up to Project Hail Mary in droves so I’m not sure why we aren’t celebrating that as well. Horror has always been an easy sell.

The MCU isn't entirely to blame for this but it gave studios the idea that the only way to appeal to teenagers was through superheroes. Teenagers want to see their worldview reflected on screen just like everyone else and these films tap into that

It is telling how much alarmist have been ringing the bell on younger generations not being interested in watching movies but the moment a studio distributes something that appeals to them, they show up in droves

I hope this is the takeaway for Hollywood: empowering artists, young and old, has always been the key to great filmmaking. That's where innovation happens. That's where fresh perspectives emerge. My cynical ass doesn't exactly think the studios will listen, though.
John Squires 🎃@FreddyInSpace

I don't think it's necessarily "horror movies directed by YouTubers" that is the next big thing, it's more studios taking chances on young talent with fresh voices & original perspectives. Many of them are naturally creating on YouTube. Hollywood is paying attention. Make stuff!

Woman of the Year would be a great romantic comedy if its ideals weren't rooted in patriarchal insecurities and the need to tear down an ambitious woman. boxd.it/eyG8pb

Very much so But, I won't sit here and pretend that's a film everyone is going to enjoy or take something from it.

It even inspired one of the best side characters in StarFox – Bill Gray, who gets his name from Robert Loggia's Independence Day character General William Gray

I always thought the city destroyers in Independence Day resembled The Saucerer boss in StarFox 64, but little did I realize that it was directly inspired by the film all the way down to how you defeat it.

To convince an initially reluctant Robert Mitchum to play his unforgettably dark role in CAPE FEAR, Star of the Month Gregory Peck and director J. Lee Thompson personally delivered a case of bourbon to his home. See it as part of tonight's Star of the Month lineup at 8pm ET.

‘Undertone’ has its fair share of problematic elements, but this is still a promising debut with enough there to build upon. The new influx of young horror directors is a great sign for industry health too boxd.it/exUxfT
