The Typhoon-class submarine, known to the Soviets as Project 941 Akula, remains the largest submarine ever built. Measuring about 175 meters (574 feet) long and 23 meters (75 feet) wide, it displaced roughly 23,000 tons on the surface and nearly 48,000 tons when submerged. Its immense size came from an innovative design that used two parallel pressure hulls with a third, smaller one above them for command and control, as well as separate compartments for torpedoes and steering. This configuration gave the Typhoon exceptional strength, redundancy, and crew comfort compared to other submarines of its time. Crewed by around 160 sailors, it carried 20 R-39 Rif ballistic missiles, each capable of delivering up to ten nuclear warheads.
