The framing of this story is insane. Their “plan” is extreme mass surveillance that would effectively ban immigrants, LGBTQ people, etc from using social media and enact sweeping censorship of online speech.

The Senate Judiciary Committee passed the GUARD Act by a bipartisan 22-0 vote. The bill by Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) would require age verification for access to "AI companions" and ban minors from using chatbots that simulate friendship or therapeutic interaction. I strongly oppose this bill for two reasons. Parents should be policing their kid’s internet usage, not the government. But more importantly, we can’t allow any age verification bills to pass, no matter what the current “moral panic” is, since this will soon lead to every single internet user having to identify themselves. This opens up everyone to both hacking and government surveillance. I favor digital privacy and oppose any legislation that would interfere with that. letsdatascience.com/news/senate-ad…

Let me put it more into context. This would apply to things like Google Search, since it utilizes AI. Once age verification is normalized nationally, it will allow speedrunning passing bills like KOSA and worse.
