Hey Twitter! I’m looking to post more on here, so I thought I’d reintroduce myself. I’m Porter Haney — CEO of @Codingscape, the software consultancy @jimmyjacobson, @makenai, and I started in 2018. If you’re my friend IRL, you’ll also know me as that guy building his own house in Vermont, or one of the most obsessive skiers you’ve ever met (more on both in the future). Jimmy and I go way back. Five years ago, we sold our company Wedgies, a social polling platform used by orgs like The Obama White House, The Wall Street Journal, Crunchbase, and more. We had such a good time building it and learning from it that we knew we had to work on something together again — but what? As we thought about what’s next, we realized a few things: - We wanted to keep the Wedgies team together - We wanted to run a services business, rather than a product business - We wanted to be cash flow positive, rather than relying on venture capital Codingscape was born, but there wasn’t a clear direction yet. Not long after our genesis, we started generating some buzz, and tech companies came to us looking to work with our team. We started out doing custom development work for these cos to address their varied needs. It took a lot of experimentation in the beginning to figure out our client base, how to run a consultancy, and how to operate on cash flow. Codingscape is now a team of 80 and has worked with a wide range of exceptional companies to help them exceed their software delivery goals. As we continue to evolve, I’ll be sharing more about: • Codingscape’s mission, values, and culture • What it’s like building a remote-first, cash flow-positive company • How to create a culture of trust and accountability • How to build a durable business in an uncertain market • And other tidbits and learnings as a founder, CEO, and dad Feel free to follow me on LinkedIn — I’ll be posting more there as well 💪

@pbeanVT FIS is such a crazy trail - I wish they'd run a ski race from the top of it! So beautiful on these clear sunny days.

Spent my last 20 years in consulting. Made Partner in my 30s. Led teams of 100+ people. Run 9-figure client portfolios. Lived and worked in 4 continents. Built, reviewed and edited 1000s of slides. Let me give you one simple trick for your next PowerPoint. If a slide does not change the audience's understanding, shift the energy of the people reading it, or even serve as a logical bridge between two ideas, then it is 100% dead weight. The temptation to add "one more" slide usually comes from your own insecurity of wanting to show you have done the work, or to pad the deck for safety... But one thing I learned is that great presentations are ruthless. They compress, not expand. When you can say it with 1 slide, saying it with 2 only dilutes the message and it's best avoided. When I am unsure about a slide, I run it through a sort of private interrogation. I sit with it for a moment and ask myself: "If I delete this, does the story break… or does it actually flow better?" If the narrative becomes tighter, the slide was useless. If the audience loses a key leap of understanding, the slide was actually doing work. Then I push it one level deeper. I look at the slide and ask: "What decision does this slide help the audience make?" If the answer is fuzzy (eg, "nice to know", "extra context", "evidence no one asked for or even care about") then it goes in the bin. ZERO mercy. Learn to be succinct.

And you’re telling me that it’s rare to make €500,000 a year working in finance in Paris vs NYC? Is that a joke? This place looks like the pinnacle of wealth in every direction. I spent the day walking around and all I see everywhere are beautifully dressed and good looking people, including what looks to be endless finance bros wearing impeccable suits, speaking very quickly and confidently and walking fast as if heading to some meeting (which struck me as pretty unEuropean to be honest). They seem pretty rich to me.

@SurfSkiWeather Vermont lost 30% of its forests. I always wondered if it made cutting those early ski trails easier or harder

I need your help. As I look to add "interesting" clients to my wealth management firm, I've spent the last 2-3 months reaching out to business owners and people doing cool things. A bit about my approach: 1. I've sent a mix of handwritten notes and emails. 2. Messages are highly customized. Spend 10-20 minutes on research and call out their business, overlap we have, and a bit about what I'm building. 3. The note includes a very soft offer to provide a 2nd opinion on their situation. 4. I send 2 follow-up emails, and add them on LinkedIn Of the 200+ people I reached out to, I've had zero real conversations. It shocks me given the personalization and effort I put in. Now, I'm struggling with what I should do next. There are a few paths I'm thinking through: 1. Just give up on this channel. Someone who doesn't know me, is unlikely to respond to this type of message. 2. Just keep sending. It's a law of large numbers. 3. I need to adjust my message to come in with a much more specific offer. Given my business, I worry this changes my brand and how I'm perceived by the person receiving it. What would you do? Any advice?
