The torching of Thantlang, following the heavy deployment of troops and artillery in Chin State, is another reason why the UN Security Council needs to convene and act now to stop the flow of revenue and weapons the junta needs to continue its assault of the Myanmar people.

Today UN Security Council discusses Myanmar exactly one year after its people voted in an election stolen by a junta systematically violating human rights. I urge the Council to help end this crisis by cutting junta access to revenue and weapons while dramatically increasing aid.

Yesterday the UN Security Council was told in a private session that the crisis in Myanmar continues to worsen. No action was taken. I urge them to reconvene in a public session to consider and vote on an emergency measure to cut the illegal junta's access to revenue and weapons.

News that the UNSC was unable to act this week, despite learning that the crisis in Myanmar has worsened, means that nations who ARE willing to act must do so, starting with coordinated, targeted sanctions and an arms embargo. Inaction should no longer be an option.
