Just War Theory explicitly allowed for force to be used to repel an aggressor and protect the innocent. When a threat is existential—meaning it poses a risk to the very survival of a society or its core liberties—the ethical calculation shifts for state leaders. From a realist perspective, a government’s supreme moral obligation is the defense and survival of its citizens. If AI tools are the only effective deterrent against an existential threat, rejecting them on a philosophical principle is an abdication of that primary duty.
