The other thing people don’t get is that the addition of assistance work is a long term strategy - not a short term one. This is why I dislike the idea of a “6 week hypertrophy block” in powerlifting programs. How much size you gonna add to those triceps in 6 weeks? Bigger triceps definitely help. But muscle growth is slow and only happens with long term consistent effort. Adding in skullcrushers isn’t gonna break your stuck bench next week or even in 6 weeks. Short term break throughs are 99% of the time linked to: Fixing bad programming Fixing bad technique Fixing bad recovery / diet
Deep Squats, Shallow Thoughts@wolfstrength

Reposting because this is a permanently relevant topic. Most of the special exercises and variations that already strong, advanced lifters do to help break stagnant lifts out of a plateau are a waste of time for ~95% of people, maybe more. Unless you already have a solid base, mastering the basics and adding a little bit of weight every workout/week, and increasing your testicular fortitude, will do more for all of your lifts than any number of variations or special exercises. The problem isn’t exactly that these special exercises and variations are wrong. The problem is that few people ever advance enough in their training to where they are needed, and most coaches don’t recognize the role that categories of training advancement play in determining this. If you can’t bench 225, it’s extremely unlikely that two special tricep exercises and three bench variations are what you need. It is exceedingly more likely that you need to train harder and more consistently, possibly eat a little more, and bust your ass to add 2.5 or 5 pounds a week to the bar.

If order to hit a big league fastball your brain needs to decide to pull the trigger roughly 25 feet from the ball reaching the plate…. In order to do that, your eyes must be oriented at a spot 25 feet to your left for a righty or 25 feet to your right if you are a lefty…. This begs the question what is the point of hitting off of a tee?…The body will never work the same vs a live ball…. Look how different Mike Trout looks when hitting off of a tee vs hitting a live ball…Watch his left arm and left shoulder do completely different things. The right forearm supinates vs an overhand pitch but it pronates vs the tee…. It’s a function of where the biceps inserts onto the radius. There isn’t a hitter on earth that will use the same swing mechanics off of a tee as they will vs an overhand pitch.
