Not a lot of players can say they stayed home and took their program from nothing to back-to-back national championship appearances with a team mainly composed of three-star recruits, but Mississippi State’s Victoria Vivians can. She could have gone anywhere out of high school, but she chose to stay in Mississippi, and help a Bulldogs program that had struggled for years. Before her arrival, Mississippi State had been to the NCAA tournament only twice in the previous 11 seasons, endured five losing records, and spent just three weeks in the AP Top 25 over the past decade. As a freshman, the Jackson native led Mississippi State to its first-ever 25-win season and ended a four-year NCAA tournament drought. She averaged 15 points and five rebounds per game and guided the team to an (18-0) start, including a ranked victory over No. 19 Georgia. By the end of the season, Mississippi State had climbed to No. 11 in the AP Top 25, the highest ranking in program history. Her sophomore season brought even more milestones. Mississippi State cracked the AP Top 10 for the first time ever and advanced to the Sweet 16. Then there were the final two seasons, during which Vivians grew into the leader of a team that was rewriting the Bulldogs’ record book. Averaging 18 points and 5.2 rebounds per game across those two seasons, she led the Bulldogs to achievements they had never seen before. She helped Mississippi State finish 16-0 in the SEC for the first time, reach their first 30-win seasons, set a single-season win record, and record the best start in program history. She guided the team to two national championship appearances, scoring 20 or more points in five of six games during the second run, including 23 against Oklahoma State, 24 against UCLA, and 25 against Louisville in the final run. What makes her story even more remarkable is that she did it on a team with only two other ranked recruits. By the time Victoria Vivians left Starkville, she had become the program’s second all-time leading scorer, lifting a program, inspiring a community, and leaving a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
