To Man City fans comparing James Trafford to Gianluigi Donnarumma (“Gigio”) let’s clear this up with some honesty about their recent performances.
Gigio is a proven world-class goalkeeper at the highest level. He’s 6’5” with insane reflexes, commanding presence, and the ability to pull off miraculous saves that change games. In the 2025/26 season at Manchester City, he’s been the undisputed No.1 in the Premier League (27 starts), keeping 11 clean sheets while facing far more shots and pressure than backup keepers usually see. His shot-stopping remains elite he’s made dozens of key saves across league and Champions League matches, and his experience from winning major trophies (including that standout Champions League run before joining City) shows in big moments.35
Donnarumma has that calm authority in the box, distributes well under pressure, and has consistently performed at the elite level for years with PSG and now City. He’s not just “good for a backup” he’s a guy who’s been named among the best keepers in the world, with the physical tools and mentality to handle the biggest stages.
James Trafford, on the other hand, is a promising young English keeper (23 years old) who’s shown flashes of quality, especially in cup games this season. He’s had some solid outings like strong performances in the Carabao Cup (including the final against Arsenal where he made crucial early saves) and a clean sheet with multiple saves against Liverpool in the FA Cup. In limited Premier League minutes (only a handful of starts), he’s kept a couple of clean sheets and earned praise for certain stops.13 But let’s be real: Trafford’s sample size this season is tiny compared to Donnarumma’s. He’s mostly been rotating in domestic cups while Gigio handles the bulk of the league and European workload. Trafford had an excellent Championship season with Burnley previously (record clean sheets, very few goals conceded), but stepping up to consistent Premier League/Champions League football against top opposition is a different beast. Some early games showed errors or rust, and his overall exposure at this level hasn’t matched Gigio’s reliability and big-game pedigree.Trafford has potential and could develop into a very good keeper with more minutes (he’s already shown composure and shot-stopping ability in patches), but right now, in recent 2025/26 performances, he’s not on the same level as Donnarumma. Gigio is the established starter for a reason elite shot-stopping, presence, and consistency over a much larger number of high-stakes matches.
It’s great to back the academy/homegrown talent, but pretending Trafford is already matching or surpassing a keeper like Donnarumma (who’s been performing at world-class standard week in, week out) is just hype talking. Enjoy both, but recognize the clear gap in proven quality and current output. Gigio is the one delivering at the top level right now. 🩵🩵🩵 Without Gigio we won’t be in this position 💯
