As the police arrested former Prime Minister K.P. Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, the newly appointed Home Minister, Sudan Gurun, posted on Facebook: “You messed with the wrong generation.” Neither the arrest without due process nor the vengeful message from a sitting home minister bodes well for Nepal’s democracy. The government must exercise restraint and act with caution.

The Balendra Shah Cabinet at its first sitting yesterday decided to selectively arrest KP Oli and Ramesh Lekhak on basis of recommendations of the problematic Karki Commission report. The Government had not even appointed an Attorney General to provide counsel on due process.
