Chad Knaus wanted to leave HMS after 2014.
JJ & Chad had a really bad rift that year & it extended into 2015.
Kasey’s health also started to decline in 2015 as well.
Ironically, Dale Jr. was Hendrick’s most consistent driver that year.
HMS was off most of in 2015.

JG had solid 7-10th place speed in 2015, that’s why he had 21 top 10s.
Rarely had winning speed, with a few exceptions (Chicagoland, Martinsville, Bristol, Daytona & Dega).
But he had top 3 speed at most places in 2014.
So JG did slip in raw speed to some extent in 2015.

@PradaAlex24 @vineypuddles28 My wording was a little exaggerated, but I meant in terms of race winning speed. He’d take every semi-decent car to a top 10 finish, but there was just not the excellence and speed he had the year before.

JG ran better in 2015 than people think.
He just had terrible luck when they actually ran well.
Top 10 runs at Atlanta, Vegas, Watkins Glen, Bristol, Chicagoland were all spoiled by bad luck.
JG did run bad at some races in 2015, but not as bad.

@PradaAlex24 @vineypuddles28 Gave the cars more downforce and better corner stability that suited him better in the 2014 package. He fell off again in 2015 when they dropped horsepower.

@CollinBCook @vineypuddles28 2013 was such an unknown for JG as he was trying to figure out the new aero package with the Gen 6.
He nailed in many places like Texas, Kansas, Chicagoland, Bristol, Sonoma, Darlington & Lowe’s.
But had head scratchers like Watkins Glen & Las Vegas.
He figured it out by 2014.

To this day, I can't fathom how Alex Zanardi pulled off this pass. Years later, I had the opportunity to ride around Laguna Seca in a track marshal's truck. Even at a slow speed, the world drops out from under you like you're driving off a cliff. Godspeed, champion.

The final caution did not need to come out — NASCAR just wanted to bunch up the field for a final restart.
Then JG lost his 93rd win (at the time) & 28 finishing positions as well.
However, the Newman move should have been penalized & JG advances.

I’ve said that if Joey doesn’t get wrecked at Martinsville he wins the chip, but they don’t mention Brad coming up short in this race. He was leading Homestead before the late debris yellow. Probably the year with the most what ifs in the elimination era.

@darient16 @rowdyxxtreme JG makes the Final 4 in 2014 if NASCAR black-flagged Newman for putting Larson in the wall at Phoenix.
NASCAR felt that move was fine and it opened the flood gates for what happened in 2015 & in later years like 2024 with Austin Dillon.
Newman had no place being in the Final 4.

@CollinBCook This decision in 2015 convinced NASCAR that less horsepower is what fans want & that’s how 550 HP came to be in 2019. 🙄
A consequence that we are still suffering.
Other than introducing the COT with the wing + splitter & the Next Gen, this was the worst car decision by NASCAR.

@CollinBCook After an amazing package in 2014, NASCAR screwed up 2015 at a mind-boggling level.
Who would have thought that a car with too much downforce and less horsepower would have aero & passing issues in race traffic… 🤔
The 2014 package just needed tweaks, not an overhaul.

JJ had a rocket that final run.
The finish was great but the racing was solid throughout the day, considering how terrible the 2015 package was at most Intermediate Tracks.

@PradaAlex24 I agree. During my rewatch Brad stunk up the show, but there was passing everywhere else throughout the field. Then Jimmie got him at the end.
