@RobertTalbert Would you call it gatekeeping if I said the same thing about trained doctors versus untrained people dispensing medical advice on YouTube?

There is often a world of difference between someone who studied philosophy formally - under a professor, being challenged by peers, writing essays, being critiqued, reading widely and deeply - and someone who's read some books in their spare time and runs a YouTube channel.

@RobertTalbert @sjggraham I think the point is that there is a lot of misinformation being thrown around on social media by people who consider themselves 'experts' based on something that happened to their cousin's hairdresser.

@sjggraham I don't disagree, but this sort of feels like gatekeeping. Not everyone has the ability to study formally due to life situations, etc. Are they considered second class citizens in philosophy?
