One of the first steps in connecting with a challenging student… is to LIKE them, rather than “put up” with them. It’s amazing how the attitude of the adult can affect the attitude of the kid.

We all have families, and we need to take care of them. Teachers should never feel guilty about investing time in their own kids.

Students likes to be praised for a job well done and especially from a teacher that they know genuinely cares about them.

Admin, if you are in the classrooms regularly and providing praise and thoughtful feedback when needed, then Nothing about a formal observation should be surprising to you or to the teacher.

Confidence without competence is arrogance.

There are so many wonderful people out there doing amazing things. Don’t get blinded by the negative and cynical. Sure, they are out there, so don’t be naive. But, don’t get discouraged as more people than you might imagine are working daily to move mountains.

Taking into consideration the worsening of multiple converging political and environmental crises -- hunger, the climate, nuclear arms, to name a few -- the commitment to peace has never been so necessary and urgent.

School culture is not created by a mission statement, catch phrases or even a set of beliefs, but it is created by the day to day ACTIONS of the whole staff.

I think you’ll make more progress with students when you’re trying to build on their strengths instead of just trying to fix their weaknesses.

Today in PLC, a colleague described how she keeps a spread sheet of things that happen on screen. Like a cat walks across the screen. Instead of chiding the student, she records, “Student has a cat. Ask its name later.” That tiny little move is about relationship now and later.
