Dispelling the myth going around amongst casual NBA fans that Tyrese Maxey needs the ball in order to be effective.
The first image I will share shows Maxey’s career On Ball %
We can see that it peaked in 2025- his WORST year when he carried the Sixers to 24 wins, the fourth lowest 3pt% in the NBA, the 9th worst oRTG, and the 6th worst net rating.
And was at its lowest in 2023
- the last year the Sixers were elite winning 54 games, Joel Embiid averaged 33 and won MVP, Harden led the league in assists (10.7). The Sixers were also 3rd in net rating that year and had the FOURTH highest Offensive Rating in the league, highest ts%, and, just to have some fun- the second highest fan attendance. Again, this is all with Maxey at a significant career low in OnBall%.
But correlation does not equal causation, and there were obviously more factors to the Sixers team success/ failure outside of Maxey’s on ball %, although it does make a compelling case that the Sixers WIN the most with him off the ball.
The second image shows Maxey’s true shooting % ordered exactly the same as his OnBall%. This shows a COMPLETELY inverse relationship, showing that the more Maxey is on the ball, the less efficient he is individually. (2021 was his rookie year and he played 15 mpg so it’s practically irrelevant)
The next image shows Maxey’s Creation ts% (also ordered the same way) where we can see that despite a general increase in volume over time he has NOT gotten more efficient as a creator
The final image I will show is the most important one of all. It shows Maxey’s 3pt rate as well as his 3pt ts%(same order) We see here that despite having a similar 3pr for his entire career as a starter, his efficiency from beyond the arc is HORRENDOUS when he has large on ball duties and is quite literally THE BEST IN THE LEAGUE when he’s off the ball the MOST.
I could go on and on but there’s only so much I can put in one tweet.
So what does this mean?
It means that Tyrese Maxey’s charming smile, high ppg and fun highlight real has tricked the casual fan into thinking he’s a true combo guard i.e. Jalen Brunson, Damian Lillard, Allen Iverson, etc. In REALITY, his on ball abilities are effectively USELESS and have barely improved throughout his career. He’s more Jordan Poole than SGA.
So is Tyrese Maxey a scrub?
NO. Tyrese Maxey is one of the best off ball guards in the league, fuck it of ALL TIME- when you combine his Catch and shoot ability with his speed in transition. He has LEGENDARY efficiency.
But for the past 3 years he’s been miscast as a floor raising creation engine when in reality he is ONLY effective as a CIELING RAISER.
Here’s the problem: Before the Jaylen Brown trade Maxey was on pace to make supermax money similar to the likes of SGA, Jokic, putting up high PRA next to aging superstars with little to no impact.
But now that the Sixers have Brown, a player who is ONLY effective offensively as a creator and a FLOOR RAISER, Maxey can fall back more into his natural role: a supercharged 6’2 Klay Thompson.
Brown still is not the playmaker that he needs, but LeBron would be. But the point of this tweet was the address the misconception that Maxey needs the ball to thrive and that he and Jaylen Brown would clash in the offense which is the complete opposite of the truth.
