By deciding not to editorialize, @washingtonpost and @latimes are violating rule 1 of Timothy Snyder's warnings "On Tyranny." 1. Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.

The October Surprise element in the General Kelly story would be the media treating it with the gravity and longevity it deserves. While also putting it in the context of the rest of the former Trump officials who have spoken out about how dangerous and unfit Trump is.
