Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers attempts to marry a self-serious tone to a laughably nonsensical storyline to drearily dull effect, demystifying one of horror's most chillingly enigmatic villains in the process. jordanpressler.blogspot.com/2026/03/hallow…

James Caan and Kathy Bates make deliriously contrasting adversaries in Misery, a taut, suspenseful pressure cooker that uses its confined setting and simple story of survival to impart prescient commentary on the thin line between fandom and obsession. jordanpressler.blogspot.com/2026/03/misery…

Gus Van Sant adopts a slice-of-life approach to dramatizing one of the most infamous massacres in American history, but his cinema-verite style is more pretentious than profound, with an inexperienced cast undermining his commitment to authenticity. jordanpressler.blogspot.com/2026/03/elepha…

Sinners was soooooo close to becoming the first horror film of the 21st century to win Best Picture, and the second in history after The Silence of the Lambs. Still a landmark year for horror at the Academy, though.

Frankenstein has won two Oscars back to back: Best Costume Design and Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That's three wins in total for horror so far, and I can smell more coming.

Amy Madigan just won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Weapons -- making her the first actress to win for a villainous female horror performance since Kathy Bates for Misery.

Doubling down on the self-referentiality that gives this franchise its sharpest edge, Scream 2 doesn't come close to the freshness or suspense of its predecessor, but remains an exciting, high-energy slasher that invalidates the worthlessness of sequels. jordanpressler.blogspot.com/2026/03/scream…

The Killing of a Sacred Deer puts a cerebral and idiosyncratic spin on its standard eye-for-an-eye premise -- although a trio of mesmerizing performances and disorienting camerawork can't entirely smooth over stilted dialogue and clinical direction. jordanpressler.blogspot.com/2026/02/the-ki…

Slavishly retracing the fundamental beats of The Strangers without recapturing the blood-curdling suspense or psychological empathy that made it stand out, Chapter 1's only real source of tension is the inevitability of two more to follow. jordanpressler.blogspot.com/2026/02/the-st…

Finally! Something in the way of valuable information. Mike Flanagan's 8-episode adaptation of Carrie is set to premiere on Amazon Prime sometime in October. No-brainer month for a hotly anticipated horror release. thedirect.com/article/stephe…

2026 may be a triumphant year for horror, with the Academy having officially lifted its bias against the genre, and yet it STILL managed to overlook this original & moving film. Should've been nominated for Best Casting, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, and Original Score.
