Early sowing can pay off but variety choice matters. GRDC-supported research led by @far_australia in southern NSW shows quick winter wheats, spring wheats and barley can be safer April-sowing options in low-rainfall, high-temperature areas. 👉 bit.ly/3LrgfHf 📸 Nicole Baxter #GRDC #EarlySowing #GrainsResearch #Wheat #Barley

Scald infections have been found by the team in some susceptible barley varieties at our Gnarwarre (SW Vic) and Bordertown (SA) sites. Be on the lookout if you've had some wet conditions!

@gsandral @BenmorrisMorris @far_australia @Price_Tom97 Not exactly how it works. Adult plant resistance (APR) linked growth stage. All varieties, even RMR susceptible to stripe rust as seedlings. APR in RMR activity GS25-29 so can still get seedling infections in lower leaves produced before this GS. Cool temp delays not prevents APR

HOW MUCH rain do we really need⁉️ Is a question on everyone's mind... Have a look 👇at wheat seed we recovered two weeks after simulated rainfall in April with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 & 25mm! Where is the 'danger zone' & how long before follow up rain is required? Stay tuned‼️

@brill_ag @brodenholland @theGRDC Same story with us, should have gone deeper! Incorporated area was softer and got the seed deeper. Rest of the paddock still just sitting and waiting for rain

Wheat (Valiant) sown at 3 cm and canola (44Y94) at 2 cm doing well at Thuddungra agronomy site. Faba beans sown at ~4 cm (on the promise of rain) struggling with marginal moisture. @brodenholland did a great job with JD disc, showing how deep the beans should’ve been sown

On this zero-till farm in the Southern Riverina, lime is applied to the soil without incorporation. Soil tests show surface lime effect but an acid layer remains in the root zone. FAR Australia is studying yield losses in pulse crops from waiting for lime to move through the soil

In this podcast, Nick Poole @Pooley_Nick_FAR @far_australia , Brendan Wallace @PinionAdvisory and SA grower Wayne Hawkins, share some surprising findings from focus paddock trials. Plus they discuss insights on how to get the most out of applied N under irrigation for a range of crop types. Listen now ▶️ bit.ly/3R14rKR #GRDCPodcast #Nitrogen #IrrigatedWheat

@agrarianliberty Possibly just phenology differences between the two canopies at the time of frost. Thicker canopy slightly more advance and has coped more from frost?

A few observations this year have me thinking there needs to be revisit on plant population. Isolated plants, limited/no frost impact, stacks of yield potential, crop plants took the frost much harder. I’m sure sparse populations have their issues but I can see some potential.

Whilst finding some frost isn't as bad as I thought (at the moment think I can see most damage now), canola AVG say 25-30% wheat probably 20-25%. Damage ranges from 5 to 70% not much at 70%. Alot of other things I found though that were more to keep an eye on. Rust and septoria in wheat, still even with dry conditions. Aphids again in canola lots of adults there now so numbers my increase before windrowing. Lots of wheat flag leaf burn in raider, but canopy is clean. All in all very fortunate, crops had big potential so that frost level still means we have good potential. Thinner canopies definitely helping lower frost damage, as they have less bulk, more moisture and N and radiate more heat at night from the ground.
