OBI WILL NOT WIN. NEITHER WILL SOWORE WIN. It’s a bitter truth and a hard fact to accept; but before you come for me, hear my opinion. Over the past few years, we’ve been seeking change in our system of governance. Yet, all our efforts to unseat the ruling party have ended in futility. This is not necessarily because the candidates supported by the youth failed to campaign properly or because their names weren’t loud enough online. It is largely because our preferred candidates lack structure, while we, the youth, often limit ourselves to online noise without corresponding action on the ground. In recent years, APC has dominated Nigeria with little real competition from other parties. We often shout about election rigging, but do we also consider the structural strength of the winning party in previous elections? How does that compare to the parties and candidates supported by the youth? Firstly, APC currently has about 31 sitting governors out of 36 states. Hypothetically, if they secure even 50% of votes in those states, while the remaining 50% is split among other parties, that alone positions them strongly for victory. In some states, results can even swing overwhelmingly in one direction. When you add all these advantages together, it becomes clear why they remain dominant. Basically, without structure, no party can overthrow the current government because APC is the only party with a deeply rooted and functional nationwide structure at the moment. Different movements in Nigeria understand this. They build systems, appoint leaders across states, and maintain presence at the grassroots. Meanwhile, supporters of Obi and Sowore are mostly active online, engaging in debates and arguments. So the question remains: Where is the structure? While other parties are strategizing for upcoming elections, you are still here fighting each other over political differences. Will that solve the problem? No. How many states have visible party offices for smaller parties? Some are still entangled in internal or legal challenges( ADC, for example). In some cases, leadership is overly centralized, making it difficult to build strong nationwide branches( SOWORE as case study here). And yet, we expect such parties to unseat a deeply established system, as how NA? When people say Nigerians are not ready, it’s not always an insult. It’s often a reflection of these realities when all factors are considered. Secondly, looking at voter demographics from the 2023 Nigerian presidential election: ■93 million registered voters ● 18–34 years: 37 million (about 40%) ● 35–49 years: 33 million (about 35%) ● 50+ years: 23 million (about 25%) Despite these numbers, turnout tells a different story every year. Total votes cast: 25 million Overall turnout: 27% Although youths (18–34) registered in large numbers, they did not turn out as much as expected. Older voters, especially those 50+, remain the most consistent voters. Interestingly, many of these older voters are more familiar with established parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC. Some may not even focus on individual candidates they simply recognize party symbols like the umbrella or broom and vote accordingly. Meanwhile, many youth parading online as Obedient or supporters of Sowore, but lack voter cards o, even grassroots engagement, also coordinated action are all missing. And yet, the expectation is to unseat the current government, i laugh in pingin. How will that be possible? As much as Obi and Sowore may be seen as better options compared to the current leadership, they can not win elections in Nigeria without strategy and structure. So, instead of forcing opinions on people, start engaging them. Share facts, highlight visible achievements, and allow individuals to develop personal conviction about who to support. Nobody is blind to the current situation in the country. With time and the right approach, change may come.
