A client once told me they'd deduct 20% from my payment for Upwork charges. I didn't land the job on Upwork oh. Another one asked me to make a "test" influencing post on LinkedIn. They wanted to see a sample of the results before paying for an actual post 😂. Regardless of these, I still land solid high-paying gigs. Here's how you can get good clients online amid the many scams: • Make your profile hard to ignore LinkedIn, Upwork, X, whichever. This is what showcases your value and prompts clients to contact you. • Research your target audience's values For example, you sell mattresses. A student & married couple both need it. They have different demographics but you know what they both value? A good night's sleep. Find the common ground and lead with it. • Define your brand Are you a friendly conversationalist or strictly formal? The goal is to maintain your identity while catering to your target audience's preferences. • Develop a clear offer Don't just say you're a UI/UX designer. What specific problem do you solve? Make your service so specific your prospects immediately understand your value. • Create content Talk about your services, but also share your expertise, case studies, and, of course, stories about your experiences. • Use a warm DM strategy Find prospects online, engage with their content, and build a meaningful relationship before you ever make a pitch. This way, you're not just another random freelancer. You're a familiar face. • Rinse and repeat This is where you check for what's working and what's not. Learn how to make audacious statements to yourself. 4 years ago when Jali kicked off, I was still working with some international companies as my 9-5. I’d say “One day, I’ll pay my staff way more than what these foreign companies are paying me now.” It has happened. It is still happening. 3 years ago, I told myself “What we make in one year, we will make in a month.” At some point last year, what we made in the entire year of 2023, we made in one week. It has happened. Still happening. 2 years ago, after being hosted for a strategy retreat by one of the multinationals in Nigeria at Lagos Continental, I was inspired. I said “Soon, my company will be able to afford to lodge staff for days for a retreat.” Last year, we lodged our staff for 4 days. One of the best retreats ever that changed our trajectory. Last year, I said: “Soon, we will pay the most lucrative salaries of any company in the world.” “Victor Okafo will be the no.1 voice in the brand storytelling space in this world.” It will happen. Give it time. Jesus is king. ❤️⏰
