There is a difference between a powerful country forcing China to build inside its borders under its rules and a weaker country letting China push it around because it has no leverage. The U.S. can threaten tariffs, block Chinese EVs, restrict Chinese-linked firms, pressure supply chains, and still sit across the table demanding investment, factories, jobs, and concessions. Reuters is reporting that U.S. lawmakers and industry groups are warning Trump not to open the door too widely to Chinese cars and shipbuilding advantages, which proves the actual issue is leverage, terms, and control, not some childish “China bad, no talking allowed” slogan. Canada’s problem is different. China has repeatedly treated Canada like a soft target because Ottawa talks big and carries a pool noodle. We get slapped around on trade, diplomacy, interference, hostages, and market access, then our political class calls weakness “nuance.” So no, this does not vindicate Carney. It exposes the difference. Trump is negotiating from strength. Canada keeps negotiating from apology. That is why China takes the U.S. seriously and treats Canada like a hallway mat.
