The deepest snow I've reliably experienced/measured in the UK was on 21st August(!) 2015, on the north east face of Ben Nevis. Approximately 15 metres (50ft) of depth from top to bottom. It’s likely the winter depth was approaching 30 metres (100ft).

I've been to the location a number of times, and it's an eerie place. The engines are still visible, and the rubber wheel largely intact in the stream-bed, 80 years after the accident. Even the RAF roundel on the rear fuselage is still discernible. 3.

On this day in 1941, while on patrol from RAF Aldergrove in Northern Ireland, a Lockheed Hudson Mk.III lost its bearings in poor weather and smashed into the side of one of the southern Highlands' most scenic hills, Ben Lui. Unfortunately, there was no happy ending. 1.

Therefore, the border was adjusted in 1985 so that the lighthouse could be located on Finnish territory. And so as not to disadvantage the Swedes in terms of land taken, an identical bite was taken from the Finnish side, resulting in a very odd ‘S’-shaped border. 4/4

Between Sweden and Finland lies one of the oddest borders in the world. This small skerry (rock) in the sea, as a result, became a textbook example of international diplomacy. 1/4

So, it is the only example in the world of an island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island in a lake. It's also known as a fifth-order island. It is not known if anyone has ever set foot on this small island (nor if anyone cares except me and a few other geeks). 4/4

In hyper-remote Nunavut, northern Canada, lies a one of many large bodies of fresh water. Yathkyed Lake is about 45 miles (72 km) long and unique in the world. 1/4

@theiaincameron I'm thinking of going to that loch, to visit that island, to visit THAT loch, to visit THAT island, to excavate a hole which will fill with water to create a lochan. Can you guess what I'd then do when I've created said lochan, fill the middle part with soil to create a island-an

Because Loch an Fhraoich itself has a small island. This island within a lake within an island within a lake is the only one of its kind in the UK (so far as I'm aware), and is called a recursive island system or fourth order island. Does anyone know of others? 3/3

Loch Maree in Scotland is a very pretty stretch of water. Arguably the prettiest in the country. In additon to its beauty, it has a claim to a record among UK lakes & lochs. 1/3

@theiaincameron Not in the UK I don't. I know of two famous examples from further afield. One example is on a volcanic island and the associated lake somewhere in the Pacific (maybe Indonesia), the other is in Arctic Canada. I could Google to check this is accurate, but Where's the fun in that?!

@theiaincameron I find this information fascinating! There's (to my memory) no clues on Raasay as to why there might be a really deep trench just off its coast. Raasay was the 12th inhabited Scottish Island I visited, I'm now at 57 and counting

NB. The deepest water in and around the U.K. is a trench just off Raasay, beside Skye. It is 314-316 metres, just pipping Loch Morar by a few metres.

Loch Morar lies in the west Highlands, just a short distance from effectively the Atlantic Ocean. At around 310 metres (1,017 ft) deep, it is the deepest freshwater loch in the UK; deeper even than its more famous cousin, Loch Ness. In fact, it’s just a few metres short of being the deepest water in and around the UK. 1/4

@StevenDick4 @theiaincameron This was College Burn, the rest of the Hen Hole area didn't have as much in the way of depth. I didn't get up to the Bizzle but most snow accumulations I saw were on the North facing slopes so its possible there's some depths of the Bizzle too but I'd be surprised if as deep

@blogs_mac @theiaincameron Based on what evidence @blogs_mac? The last few years tell a completely different story to what you are saying. This year could just be a one off and what I saw yesterday is a result of easterlies which provide large accumulations when they do occur, but these events are rare

Are @LeedsCC_Help going to once again take the draconian/ dictatorship approach 2 grassroots football & call off all games on pitches this weekend (meaning primary school aged kids will likely have to play THREE games a week in April) or are you going to take a sensible approach?

@theiaincameron @GWhittell Unlike 2010 and 2018, all this snow (but a very light dusting) has passed us by so far in SW Leeds. I doubt we'll have much overnight tonight either based on the @metoffice forecast. It's due to come within 10 miles of here, but unlikely to come this far NE

@nickstew_art @theiaincameron Hi Nick - yes, & every time - people should check the weather before heading in the mountains. Two of us were due to do Crib Goch in May but the forecast on that day looked horrid so we did a lower, easier walk. Distance travelled to get there should never be a deciding factor!
