One of the most common mistakes I see investors make in mining: They compare grades. 5% copper sounds better than 2% copper, right? Not necessarily. Here's what actually determines whether a deposit makes money - Net Smelter Return. NSR accounts for everything that happens after you pull rock out of the ground. Recovery rates. Smelter charges. Transport costs. Penalties. Credits for byproduct metals or even better separate payable streams. A 4% copper deposit with significant payable streams in Platinum Palladium Gold and Silver averaging 95% recovery can return more dollars per tonne than a 10% deposit with complex metallurgy and no byproducts. This is exactly why polymetallic systems like the Lion Zone change the economics. When you're recovering copper, nickel, palladium, platinum, and gold from the same rock - those payables stack. The NSR per tonne climbs in ways that single-commodity deposits simply can't match. Grade gets the headline. NSR gets the mine built. Watch the metallurgy results.
