And here’s FT with a whole raft of talking heads declaring the unpopularity of Starmer & Reeves to be an unfathomable mystery: ft.com/content/19958c… ‘There’s a real dislike, even loathing’: why voters hate Starmer and Reeves. (Only @johnmcternan comes close to explaining).
Jeremy Gilbert@jemgilbert

In today's Guardian, Larry Elliott says it's hard to understand why Keir Starmer's government is so unpopular. Well, here's me in @NewStatesman explaining why.

Q: Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist? MAMDANI: I've spoken about-- TRUMP: That's okay. You can just say yes. I don't mind.

@rcolvile Of course it can do both. The problem is the comforting fiction that Downing Street clings to - that it can outsource political arguments and party management to a fictional construct they call the “bond markets”. It’s their version of TINA and there really are alternatives.

This is a traditional BBC crisis, which NR can live with. But it arrives in the middle of a much bigger crisis, which everyone in power is desperate to keep quiet about: the media are becoming decisively digital & the Thatcherite consensus is collapsing: that's the context here.

That this is the strategy has been clear for a while. But MM forgets that for it to work it means they have to be an opposition to Farage - and that means it gives leverage to the those more centre & left than Starmer which has to be conceded.
Pippa Crerar@PippaCrerar

Interesting: this is Morgan McSweeney's view, now apparently backed up by polling. "Even if they hate us, they hate Farage more," one ally of the PM's chief of staff told me recently.

There are 134 ways Phillipson could have answered this question to her advantage. I’ve spent all day counting them. To choose to lie and feign ignorance is not one of them.

@Dannythefink We'll find out. I agree the tensions in the project will be hard to manage and sustain so far out from 2029. But @ProfAFinlayson convinced me that the gap between now and an election needn't be fatal for them if (big if) they use it well.

I don't think it is a mistake: I think speeches like this annoy and offend political insiders but most Reform-curious voters will think he's speaking truth. Sod the lot of them. The more interesting question is why they don't perceive Yusuf as part of that same political elite.
Daniel Finkelstein@Dannythefink

One of the things in politics is that people and parties go up but then one day they come down. It’s interesting to watch this video because this guy is so full of himself that he doesn’t appreciate that he is making a mistake.

I was delighted to be joined by @ProfAFinlayson for the @LRB's On Politics. Talking digital right (and online left), the champions of I egalitarianism, print and social democracy, Farage as influencer and... whether the internet is just right-wing.

@jemgilbert I agree but I'd like to know what stories 'your party' is feeding to news media & who it it puts up to talk about them. From what I can see there's no organised comms office & the person filling the gap - James Schneider - is being roundly attacked by 'supporters' for doing so.

I don’t get this right-wing urge to make everything about politics or some ‘culture war’. Why not just enjoy a bit of sport or failing that let others enjoy it. Not everything has to be about your personal political hobbies.

The quality of women's football is 'largely abysmal', says Rod Liddle. Is there any use in comparing the men's game with the women's, when a team of teenage boys can beat one of the best sides in the world? Link to full video in 🧵
