In a new draft article with my colleague Loy Hui Chieh, we argue that AI is not creating these tensions so much as exposing and accelerating them. At stake is the social contract that underpins higher education — and the social licence that too often has been taken for granted.

People are rightly concerned about what AI will mean for graduates’ career prospects. But if those fears materialise, the next question will be more fundamental: why pay for a university education at all — and why should governments subsidise it? dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.6…
