@BenjySarlin "Overhaul ICE" and even "hold people accountable" are also kinda vague. The issue to me is that pretty much every slogan I've heard used this discourse is pretty vague.

I see Ds criticizing the wording ("halt all immigration enforcement") as loaded. That's true. It's also true when you adopt ambiguous slogans with multiple meanings to different people don't be surprised that you're going "But that's not the version *I* meant!" through 2028.

This is likely happening for the same reason that returning tariff setting authority to Congress was not part of the Ds’ shutdown demands — many unions, environmental groups & lefties are broadly pro-tariffs.
It’s extremely frustrating & swing district/state Ds should buck them.

What is absolutely *wild* to me is that a lot of Democrats are refusing to attack Trump on tariffs as the #1. No other policy he has is nearly as unpopular — and save for healthcare, there's nothing that would cause nearly as much damage to Republicans.

@ZaidJilani It reads like you don't like her (fair, nobody has to like everyone/anyone in particular) and trying to backfill reasons. I think say Mamdani is better at sticking to class-focused messaging (if you wanted to compare the two) but talking about "gravitas" is just vague vibe stuff.

I think the biggest problem for AOC isn’t even her past endorsement of extreme policies like prison abolition, it’s just that she is still too green overall. She needs to actually show she can pass things, manage diverse political coalitions, etc. And develop gravitas.

It doesn't really matter, in many ways, and again, a win is a win — whether it's by 5% or 20%. But for those saying national Democrats need to embrace Mamdani, or those who are mad at Gillen/Suozzi for bashing him, there's a reason for what they're doing: he's very unpopular.

A lot of people are quoting this with Zohran's numbers in a three-way race. Zohran is obviously going to win the mayoral race, but the fact that he's up by 20% is because Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa are splitting the vote. H2H polls have Mamdani ahead of a toxic Cuomo by less.

Looks like early + mail votes have dropped.
Mamdani leads by 9.1 points (37,451 raw votes).
I previously said that Mamdani would want to be up 10 points among this group to feel decent.
Definitely not a death knell, but Team Mamdani was probably hoping for better.

@joshtpm @admcrlsn If it's CLEAR it would hurt I can get "let's just win & then we'll do good stuff". It's cynical (i.e. why people hate politics) but I could get it. If it's NOT clear then just do the right thing! Morally correct + lots of precedence for "doing the right thing" paying off later.

@admcrlsn I think a key part of understanding 1 and 2 is to focus on the fact that in terms of added or lost votes it's by no means clear that shifting away from Biden's position gained votes for the D coalition. A huge amount of the confusion over this stems from that assumption.

I think a few things are true at once:
1) Biden’s record on Gaza will (IMO justifiably) forever scar his legacy
2) Harris only slightly rhetorically broke with Biden on Gaza (out of loyalty I suppose?)
3) The lack of remorse Uncommitted has shown since the election is telling

I think it’s fair to interrogate the goals and strategy behind the ‘Uncommitted’ effort, but to suggest that VP Harris broke with Biden on Gaza in any substantive way strains credulity. Her rhetoric might’ve shifted a bit, but in terms of policy, there was truly no daylight.

Americans don’t really understand how little power our political parties have and how different our election norms and laws are when compared to other countries, in many ways.

It is with humility and appreciation that I have accepted Damien Kurek’s offer to resign his seat in Battle River-Crowfoot so that I can work to earn the support of citizens there to serve them in Parliament. Damien’s selfless act to step aside temporarily as a Member of Parliament shows his commitment to change and restoring Canada’s promise.
