@HoffProf I've rarely heard professors or practitioners emphasize the importance of testing memorization. The profession rewards, and will continue to reward, cognitive skills/speed. In the future (if not the present) the profession will reward facility with AI.

@HoffProf This seems exactly right to me. And of the three, testing memorization seems the least defensible.

At moments like this it is worth considering and reflecting upon the history and principles of religious toleration. Such tolerance was not about being nice to people with different customs or holidays, but something far more profound. 1/

@maya_sen @jamalgreene @sudoraohacker I think if one goes through the actual memos, as opposed to just reading the free bacon piece, I think one might have a different view than some of the reactions I’m seeing. It’s remarkable how deeply the students engaged in the substance and merits of the articles.

Agreed - very serious problems with untrained students acting as a) academic gatekeepers and b) intellectual representatives of the university Law reviews made sense maybe 60 years ago, before peer review become standard Now they’re completely bananas

I can understand why the President pardoned his son. I can even see why it seemed necessary. But to use the pardon power in this way is deeply troubling.

@narosenblum In my optimistic moments, I had the same thought, not about gerrymandering, which might be a bridge too far for the parties, but about right to vote legislation. If the GOP can win with low propensity voters and if they need those voters, it’s in their interest to do something.

I do wonder whether we might see a real opportunity to advance voting rights. If the new GOP coalition relies on low-propensity voters, if it’s a multi-racial coalition, if gerrymandering has the potential to hurt GOP too, etc. might there be room for bipartisan reform?

Justice Kagan has been developing a jurisprudence of federal elections as national elections and limiting the role of the states. This is the best way of understanding her opinion in Chiafalo. Murray's argument is running smack dab against her vision.

I'm so dismayed by Liz Magill's resignation and I so hope that Claudine Gay @Harvard will not follow. I fear too few of us have said what many of us think: She did nothing wrong, & the real failure of leadership would be surrendering to a campaign so hostile to our values. /1

Words are truly inadequate to express the full measure of Prof Ogletree. It is hard to believe that one person did so much and touched so many. He really did make the world a better place. We will treasure and honor all that he has bequeathed to us. His work will live on.
