I’ve never been great at expressing myself, but I’ll give it a shot because this community has given me so much in the short time since I have joined. As someone with ADHD, making friends was never hard for me, but keeping and maintaining friendships has always been difficult for me. As we get older, get jobs, move to a different place, and pursue different hobbies and career choices, or just plain busy, we tend to focus our attention on the people physically near us. This is especially true with people with ADHD - Object Permanence sucks and I hate it. After Yokohama Worlds, I took a break from Pokemon, not because I needed a break FROM Pokemon, but rather because I was busy renovating a house and working a 9-5. I noticed feeling like I was growing distant from the friends I had made in Pokemon up to that point. But I knew it was just my brain being dumb so I let those feelings pass because I knew it was just not true. So I yolo’d it to New Orleans for NAIC - an amazing experience all around! From playing in the tournament, to running the Bonus Disc Jirachi and EON ticket distributions, to late nights with EVERYONE on bourbon street, to the mosh pit I started when Death Metal Baby Got Back was playing on Frenchmen St. Despite how good any individual experience is, what elevates an experience into greatness that you’ll never forget is the people you share it with! Pokémon and the VGC Community taught me that distance is not a negative in any way. The people you click with and enjoy spending time together may not always be those that are near you. And that’s okay. It just means that when you do get together and see each other again, you’ll have more to catch up on and more shenanigans to get yourself into! This is the essence of Pokemon. More than just a game, it’s a community of amazing people spread both near and far; from down the street to the other side of the globe. Although we don’t get to see each other all that often, sometimes for months or even a whole year at a time, we cherish the time we have together and make the best of it. NAIC was the event I needed. It was just too short. I enjoyed playing since little was at stake & I talked with many people, player & staff alike. Met some new people too! Best IC for me in a while. I like playing. Just not the full circuit. Gonna continue the play/judge hybrid.
