@DilulloCody Contested elections are a healthy sign, but candidates understandably want to put their names forward when they have a realistic path to victory. Only once in history was a CLC incumbent president defeated (2014) and that took a Herculean effort.

@Prof_Savage Curious what your thoughts are on this? Feels like a stagnation of grassroots/labour leadership. Reading editorials from James Adair that mirror my own experience on the west coast along with poor electoral track record makes this result disappointing imo. We need new leadership.

#CLC2026 delegates approve "sustainable jobs" resolution that includes "expansion of jobs in the industrial and resource sectors, including the nuclear sector." In doing so, the Congress has seemingly abandoned its historical opposition to nuclear expansion. #canlab

The amended resolution passes with broad support from #CLC2026. Interestingly, some of the pro and cons speakers were from the same unions.

Update: The #CLC2026 resolutions committee has accepted the proposed amendment from yesterday to add severing ties with the Histadrut to the resolution on Palestinian solidarity. Delegates are now debating the amended resolution. #canlab

Speakers go back and forth, with charges of anti-semitism and the response from a Jewish delegate that Judaism and Zionism should not be conflated. Some delegates worry that the resolution is too political and divisive, while others insist it is a human rights issue.

Action plan passes nonetheless with about 1/3 of delegates opposed. To contextualize the result, the Chair clarified before the vote that a no vote would not result in an improved plan, but rather no plan.

Former CUPW president Mike Palacek opposes #CLC2026 action plan, calls for a rejection of “strategic litigation” in favour of “strategic industrial action.” Delegates deliver a standing ovation in response to his intervention.
