The NFT market exploded in 2021, and @BoredApeYC (BAYC), a collection of 10,000 cartoon ape NFTs by @yugalabs, would eventually become the face of NFTs just like Bitcoin is for crypto.
But at launch?
Each NFT cost around $160, and the project struggled. During its early sale, only about 650 NFTs were sold.
Most people would have looked at those numbers and called it a failure.
The idea was a fictional club where "bored billionaire apes" hung out, made memes, and talked crypto. It was a fun concept, but that alone wasn't enough to create demand.
Everything changed when Crypto Twitter started paying attention.
Influencers shared the project, the community grew, and the entire collection sold out within 12 hours.
But the momentum didn't stop there.
Celebrities like Eminem, Tom Brady, and Stephen Curry joined the community. BAYC partnered with brands like Adidas, crossed into mainstream culture, and by 2022 had generated over $1 billion in total sales.
The lesson?
Not every great project succeeds on the first try.
Some projects need time.
Some need community.
Some need the right moment.
A slow start doesn't mean a project is dead.
Sometimes, the projects people ignore today become the ones everyone wishes they had believed in tomorrow.
Build. Improve. Stay consistent.
History has shown that first impressions aren't always the final outcome.
