My thanks to US Attorney Dan Bishop and his team for their partnership in securing a conviction for a $1.7 million Medicaid provider fraud case today. For two years, a Greensboro healthcare clinic operator claimed - and was paid - for drug tests she never actually provided. Our team first detected red flags when our data mining specialists found odd patterns in her billing. We brought the case to the office of US Attorney Bishop, and we investigated and prosecuted it together. One broader point here: This is why we asked the General Assembly to strengthen our data mining capabilities for Medicaid provider fraud, and I'm grateful they recently did. It will result in more taxpayer money saved and more fraud caught and prosecuted. I appreciate the bipartisan support for this work.

The new Republican state budget almost completely defunds Legal Aid of North Carolina. Nearly 80% of Legal Aid's clients are women, primarily escaping domestic violence, entangled in housing conflicts, or escaping human trafficking. Nevertheless, conservative critics of Legal Aid in the state legislature insist it promotes "leftist ideologies." So they're gutting it.

I’d prefer the whole world stop to watch two amazing teams of legal scholars, all of them women, debate one another. Another world is possible.
