⠀ A soft laugh slipped from her lips, light and warm at his sudden apology. Her brows lifted, eyes glinting with quiet amusement. “Sorry for what, hm?” she murmured. “Pour m’embêter… for trying to annoy me?” She gave a small shake of her head, a sweet smile forming. “Ah, mon cher, if that was your intention—you didn’t quite succeed.” Her fingers slipped a little more snugly into his grasp, warmer now despite the cold night air. “But… you’re forgiven,” she added softly, almost a whisper. “Always.” ⠀

When Kaelie gave his hand a small tug, Hyde led the way. He slipped their joined hands into the pocket of his cloak, still holding onto hers. The town’s closeness to the sea meant the cold ocean wind drifted through the streets quite often. There were not many people about that night, and the quiet made the rustle of leaves and the sound of their shoes against the concrete road seem louder than usual. The silence stretched on for quite some time until... “Sorry,” Hyde said suddenly, breaking the quiet. He did not slow his pace, though his gaze dropped briefly to the road ahead.

It was not a particularly sensible hour for arranging a meeting. Most people would have been fast asleep by then. But busy lives often turn the most inconvenient hours into perfectly ordinary ones. Hyde and @ProfsDupont were among those sorts of people.

⠀ Steadying herself as her feet met the gravel, a soft breath slipped past her lips while the world settled back into place. Her fingers tightened slightly around his, lingering a moment longer than needed. “I always forget that part,” she murmured with a faint laugh. At his remark, she glanced down at her shoes, then back up at him, a small, knowing smile forming. “I’ve survived worse than a long walk,” she said lightly. “Though I can’t promise I won’t complain halfway through.” Her thumb brushed absently against the back of his hand before she gave it a gentle tug forward. “Come on then, Professor Hagreaves. Lead the way.” ⠀

“I wasn’t waiting at all—you’re just in time,” he replied softly. Hyde reached for Kaelie’s hand, clasping her cold fingers firmly in his own. “Ready?” he asked, meeting her eyes. “On one… two… three!” For a split second, an invisible hook seemed to catch somewhere behind the navel. Everything spun into darkness before their lungs could draw a breath. The next second, they landed beside a lamppost in the middle of Montrose with a soft crunch of gravel underfoot. A quiet road stretched before them, lined with tall trees whose branches stirred gently in the night air. Beyond the trees stood neat rows of houses scattered among wide gardens and open fields. “We’ll be walking quite a bit tonight,” Hyde said, still holding her hand. “I hope you’re wearing comfortable shoes.”

⠀ Kaélie blinked when Hyde wiped the smear from her cheek, then let out a soft, sheepish laugh. “Oh—so that’s what it was,” she murmured. She brushed a bit of dust from her sleeve, then looked up at him with a small smile. “Well, you’re still here, so I suppose I didn’t keep you waiting too terribly long.” A beat passed before she extended her hand towards him, inviting. “Shall we?” ⠀

He turned and greeted her with a small wave. When her face finally emerged beneath the lamplight, a smear of dirt across @ProfsDupont’s cheek made him smile. Hyde reached out and gently wiped it away with his thumb. “Didn’t you check a mirror before coming out?” he asked.

@ProfsHyde ⠀ Ah, so you’re saying you’ve mastered both Magical Creatures Handling and Child Management. Impressive résumé, Uncle Hyde. ⠀

@ProfsDupont Children and creatures are equally dangerous. I learnt how to deal with that.
