Focusing on usefulness, not benchmarks. There was a time when almost every ML paper focused on ImageNet-1K challenges that evaluated how well a model could correctly predict the main object in an image. We even occasionally saw headlines where AI beat humans on object detection. But such benchmarks often have a fatal flaw—they cannot measure new paradigm shifts, just like a benchmark for horses cannot be applied to cars. Over time, we are likely to optimize something that should not have been there in the first place. It was a good first-order proxy for a subset of usefulness, but not the whole end goal. Thus, it is critically important to keep an eye on the end game while working toward it. People courageous enough to do so might miss a few spotlight opportunities but eventually they are the ones who finish the game.
