I wrote an article for @guardian on the phenomenon of live mass strandings, where many whales end up on beaches. There are many causes, but their social nature seems a key factor in understanding, responding to and preventing more of these tragic events theguardian.com/environment/20…

Black Friday and the pre-Christmas sales are upon us and while we all love giving, the potential risk to the environment of unnecessary buying is something we all want to avoid. Check out @TheGoodRegistry, a fantastic way to give better gifts. thegoodregistry.com

Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC)
It's been a great day for our anti-captivity campaign! A law which makes it illegal in England and Northern Ireland to sell and advertise tickets to cruel whale and dolphin facilities abroad has just passed its Third Reading in the UK parliamentary process! Once this Bill becomes law, tour operators will find it much harder to make money from captive cruelty. #EndCaptivity

We're sad to hear that a large whale has been found beachcast (deceased) at a beach north of Wellington. Muaūpoko spokesman Dean Wilson said the whale, which washed up early Tuesday morning, was a taonga and would be buried in the sand on the beach. Photo: Stuff

As marine sentinels, aihe (dolphins) reflect the state of the environment. From rare dental anomalies to skin lesions which offer insight to animal health, strandings continually offer new perspectives to NZ taonga species @NatSciMassey, #CetaceanEcologyRearchGroup

Concerning drone footage of this pod was circulating yesterday before they stranded. It showed the pod forming a tight group, just 100m from shore and many whales spy hopping... All indicators of distress. Our thoughts are with the teams responding today.

#BREAKING: An unusual clustering of a pod of pilot whales has taken a heartbreaking turn, with around 70 of the mammals stranding themselves at Cheynes Beach. More to come. #9News | WATCH LIVE 6pm

An incredible day out on the water yesterday! We were lucky enough to locate a pod of Orca and had a great time slowly travelling alongside them back towards Auckland City 🏙️ Our small group of passengers onboard loved it - there were a few happy tears shed 😭😍 #whalewatchingakl

Scientists have described a new dolphin species armed with protruding, tusk-like teeth for swift and violent attacks on prey – but we’re about 25 million years too late to see it (with a shout-out to the great Ewan Fordyce) nzherald.co.nz/nz/newly-disco…

So sad to hear of the passing of WDC friend and whale champion extraordinaire Roger Payne. Roger's recordings of humpback whale songs were the soundtrack of the Save the Whale movement. They made people realize there are intelligences other than ours on this beautiful planet. One of the last things Roger wrote before he died was this timely reminder that we must #SaveTheWhaleSaveTheWorld time.com/6284884/whale-…

The great Roger Payne has passed. I was able to speak with him and bid farewell. Five days prior, when he knew his end was coming, he published this recollection to help us find our way forward. time.com/6284884/whale-…

2. Sightings of humpback whales can be reported to the @docgovtnz via their hotline - 0800 DOCHOT or online, just search DOC Marine Mammal Sighting Form. Reports of sightings are always valuable & help increase our knowledge of whale distribution and movements around New Zealand.

1. A whale-y awesome sight! There have been numerous sightings over the last week of humpback whales along the east coast of the south island and in Wellington as the whales head north to their wintering breeding grounds in the tropic’s 🐳🩵 Photos: Sally Eyre and Michael Norris
